Corneal Infections
The cornea is the outermost, transparent part of the eye.A delicate structure protected by the eye lids, the tear film, and our immune system, it is responsible for clear vision. There are various reasons for corneal infections like injury, fall of foreign bodies or improper use of contact lenses. Delayed treatment of corneal infections can lead to loss of transparency. Since clear vision depends upon the corneal transparency, if the infections are not diagnosed early and treated appropriately, can lead to permanent impairment or even loss of vision.
At Shakthi Eye Care Centre widely regarded as top Cornea Specialty Clinic in chennai, we have Dr Balamurugan who is one of the Best cornea specialist in Chennai having experience in the treatment of various types of corneal infections.
Corneal infections can be caused by a variety of infective agents like bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites, and sometimes a combination of these. Removal of a small amount of the infected tissue for laboratory studies may be needed for accurate diagnosis.
Once the infection is identified, topical antibiotic drops are started at frequent intervals and close monitoring is needed to assess the improvement. Medications may not be successful in every patient and when the infection doesn’t respond to drops, surgical treatment may be required. Book Your Cornea Consultation Today
Keratoconus
Normally, the cornea is a smooth, dome shaped structure. When the cornea becomes thin and bulges out gradually, it is called Keratoconus. Cornea has two-thirds of the focussing power of the eye and is responsible for the light rays to get focussed on the nerve layer, called Retina. When the corneal shape is altered the light rays are no longer focussed properly leading to distortion of vision. It usually affects both eyes but one eye may be more affected than the other. In addition to the change in the shape and progressive thinning of the cornea, the advanced cases may also develop scars in the cornea which may further reduce the vision.
Diagnosing Keratoconus
Usually Keratoconus starts around the age of puberty and gradually increases in severity till 25-30 years of age. Diagnosis of this condition is based on assessment of vision and clinical examination. If Keratoconus. is suspected based on the initial check, you'll need the advanced corneal imaging called tomography for confirmation. This process is always handled by our expert Cornea Specialist in Chennai at Shakthi Eye Care Centre.
Treatment of Keratoconus
If the condition is progressive, which is more often the case in younger patients, Corneal Collagen Cross linking (C3R) is done to arrest its progression. C3R is day care surgical procedure done by cornea transplant specialist under topical anaesthesia to arrest the progression of the disease.
Early stages of keratoconus can be treated with glasses or contact lenses. There are various types of contact lens options available like RGP lenses, Rose-k lenses or scleral lenses that can improve the vision in patients with keratoconus.
Contact lenses may not improve vision when the condition is advanced or in patients with corneal scarring. In such patients surgical options like placing ring segments within the cornea orcorneal transplantation may be necessary to improve vision.
To prevent progressive vision loss and for a better visual outcome it is very important to diagnose this condition at an early stage itself.
At Shakthi Eye Care Centre, we have one of the best Corneal Surgery doctors in Chennai who ensure a complete corneal evaluation is done for patients suspected of having keratoconus. Tomography is then performed on selective patients to confirm the condition and plan further treatment.
